The acronym FIRE, or Fully Integrated Robotized Engine, the brand name by which it became internationally known, refers to the innovative, almost completely automated assembly system. Built at the FIAT plant in Termoli (Campobasso), the system represented a significant technological advancement in large-scale engine production. The first version of the engine, a 750 cc, was marketed in 1985 with the Autobianchi Y10 and the FIAT Uno. Subsequently, through the development of various versions with higher displacements and higher performance, the FIRE was used in various cars, becoming one of the FIAT Group's most widely produced engines. Designed for compact dimensions and a reduced number of components, the engine stood out for its low operating costs and remarkable reliability, achieved through careful structural sizing that allowed it to weigh less than 70 kg, even in the 1000 cc version. The following models, from 1.1 litres to 1.4 litres, were progressively equipped with various electronically controlled injection systems, from single point to the more modern multipoint, supercharging, electronic ignition and exhaust gas aftertreatment systems.
