Description

The T58 engine is a first-generation turboshaft, originally developed by General Electric in the latter half of the 1950s for helicopter applications. From a design standpoint, the engine is characterised by a ten-stage axial compressor, the first three stages of which are equipped with variable-geometry stator vanes, an annular straight-through combustion chamber, and a two-stage gas generator turbine. Downstream of this is a free power turbine, mechanically independent from the gas generator. Overall, the engine features a compact configuration and a high power-to-weight ratio, combined with good dynamic response, operational stability, and reliability. The T58 was progressively upgraded through the development of numerous variants tailored to specific applications and remained in production until the first half of the 1980s. In Italy, it was manufactured under licence by Alfa Romeo Avio and was extensively used in the Sikorsky HH-3F helicopters operated by the Italian Air Force. In these aircraft, the T58 was installed in a twin-engine configuration and drove the main rotor via a common transmission, ensuring redundancy and adequate power availability for search and rescue missions, even under demanding operational conditions.
